Differences between North and South Sardinia for Kitesurfing

Both the South and the North of Sardinia are windy and have many beaches suitable for kitesurfing.

The main differences between North and South Kitesurfing Sardinia are mainly related to the quality of the wind and of the waves, to the temperatures and to the number of kite spots.

In the North of Sardinia, the predominant winds are the Mistral (wind from North-West), the Tramontana (wind from North) and the Grecale (wind from North-East). These winds, in the Northern Sardinia are cold and often gusty being disturbed by the nearby Corsica.

The temperatures in the Northern Sardinia are often over 5 degrees lower than the Southern Sardinia.  In the North of Sardinia, because the temperatures could be cold, it is better to use always a wetsuit.

In the South of Sardinia, the predominant winds are the Mistral, the Sirocco (wind from South-East) and, in some locations, the thermal winds. Here in the South of the island, the winds are almost always enough steady; the air and water temperatures are higher than the North Sardinia. Try to believe!

Weather Conditions for Kitesurfing in Sardinia: Winds and Temperatures

As you could see in the here under paragraphs, the best season for kite surfing or sailing in Sardinia, runs from March to November: temperatures are milder than in the other months and the number of sunny and windy days is higher.

In the months of December, January, February, it is for sure possible to Kitesurf in Sardinia but the weather is less stable and the number of “storm” days  is higher. In this months the best sea activity is usually the Surf!

Winds of Sardinia

Thanks to his position, in the center of Mediterranean sea, Sardinia has a very high percentage of windy days.

The predominant winds of Sardinia are Scirocco, that blows from South East, and Mistral, that blows from North-West.

Even the thermal wind is a fairly common wind in Sardinia: in fact, from March/April to September/October, on the warmest and sunniest days, in several locations, is blowing also the this wind. Thermal wind is a local wind created by the difference in temperature between the air above the sea and the air above the ground. It is not predicted by the weather forecast and for this reason, suggestions from local kite schools could be needed. 

Weather and Temperatures in Sardinia

During the Spring, Summer and Autumn season, the weather is more stable if compared with the winter season, when storms with strong winds and high waves may be present.

Air temperatures are mild even during the winter season. In all seasons, you may find some degrees of difference between the north of Sardinia, more cold, and the South of the island, more warm.

Temperatures of the sea of Sardinia are approximately 23-25°C during the summer season, while during the other seasons they are between 21 and 15 °C.

South Sardinia Kite Spots

Until recently. Kitesurf and Windsurf lovers associate Sardinia exclusively with Porto Pollo, famous for its glorious past.

In the recent years, however, the South of Sardinia has had a boom of Kitesurfers, Windusrfers and other sailors thanks to:

  • the fantastic beaches and nature,
  • the very high percentage of winds and good weather,
  • the good travel connections from the most of Europe’s capital and the airport and the port of Cagliari,
  • the fact that the Spots of Southern Sardinia are more variables and less crowded than the kite spots of the North of the island.

Moving between the south-east, the south, and the south-west coasts of Sardinia, the probability to find wind for kitesurfing is extremely high.

The most of the kite spots described here under, usully have sandy backdrop and flat water and therefore offer perfect conditions both beginner and advanced kitesurfers.

The coast from Villasimius, in the south-east of Sardinia, to Funtanamare, in the south-west of the island, is probably one of the windiest coast of the Mediterranean sea.

Cagliari has two beaches for kitesurfing: Poetto Beach and Petrol Beach.

Poetto beach, the main beach of Cagliari, is the most popular among the tourists. Located between the Devil’s Seat mountain and the beach of Quartu Sant’Elena, Poetto beach of Cagliari is a long beautiful beach with lot of services. It is easily accessible by car and easily reachable by public transportation.

Poetto Beach of Cagliari, with has a sandy bottom, is also a perfect place for kite surfing, expecially in the low season season, from September to May,  when the beach is less crowded and the kiters can enjoy all the beach.

The best winds for kitesurfing at Poetto Beach are  the Libeccio (blowing from South West), the Scirocco (blowing from South East) and the Levante (blowing from East). Strong winds could bring waves and in this conditions the Poetto is a kite spot for expert.

With strong winds blowing from east, beginners should go to the Poetto of Quartu Sant’Elena (pratically the end of Poetto Beach of Cagliari) or to Punta Trettu.

Kitesurfing Petrol Beach, Southern Sardinia

La Maddalena Spiaggia (The Maddalena Beach), in Capoterra, next to Cagliari, is also known as Petrol Beach.

Petrol Beach is a great kite spot with thermal wind, usually from April to the end of August. Here a Petrol beach, the thermal wind can reach even 20 knots. At Petrol beach the thermal wind is good if there is a base of wind from south.

Kitesurfing Villasimius, Southern Sardinia

Villasimius, popular tourist destination of Sardinia, has fantastic beaches surrounded in a natural marine park.

Villasimius is a good kite spot especially during the low season (from October to May).

During the summer season, from June to September, Villasimius is very crowded. That is why for kitesurfing in Villasimius in this period, it is needed  a boat / rubber dinghy to launch the kite 200 m away from the beach.

The best beaches for kitesurfing in VIllasmius are Campulongu and Porto Giunco. These white sand beaches are surrounded by a beautiful Mediterranean scrub and have a sand backdrop. Their waters are crystal clear.

While for Kitesurfing in the beach of Campulongu, wind from West or South West is required, for Kitesurfing in the beach of Porto Giunco, wind from Eastor North East is needed. So, in Villasimius, when the wind changes direction, you can change the kite spot and this gives you a high chance to kitesurf. Anyway the winds are often light so big kites are recommended.

The best beach for kitesurfing in Chia is Su Giudeu beach.

The beaches near Chia statistically have a very high number of windy days. The best winds for kitesurfing in Chia are all winds blowing from east: Grecale (blowing from Noeth-East), Levante (blowing from East) and and Scirocco (blowing from South-East).

During the summer season, from June to September, Chia is very crowded. That is why for kitesurfing in Villasimius in this period, it is needed  a boat / rubber dinghy to launch the kite 200 m away from the beach.

In Chia, they are organized, usually during the months of October and November, some kite events e.g., kite wave contests.

Kitesurfing Porto Botte, Southern Sardinia

Porto Botte is a bay of about two kilometers in the south-west of Sardinia.

The bay of Porto Botte is known among the kiters as great kite spot.

The kite spot of Porto Botte is super with the Mistral that blows side onshore. Water is usually choppy.

In Porto Botte there are three different kite spots:

  1. The most northerly Kite Spot, il Fortino, has a muddy bottom and a stronger wind (even if offshore) than the other two kite spots of Porto Botte.
  2. The Center Kite Spot of Porto Botte is choppy with a sandy bottom.
  3. The most southerly Kite Spot of Porto Botte has a sandy bottom and a great landscape but the wind is less strong than the other two Kite Spot.

Even if Porto Botte is suitable both for beginners and advanced riders, Punta Trettu is advisable for beginners because the flat and shallow water of this kite spot.

Kitesurfing Punta Trettu, Southern Sardinia

Punta Trettu is located in the South West of Sardinia, in the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu and close to Sant’Antioco.

The Kite Spot of Punta Trettu is considered one of the best kite spots of Sardinia because its shallow flat water and steady winds. Given these characteristics, Punta Trettu is perfect especially for beginners that can stand up and walk, in case of need, for hundred meters.

The best wind for kitesurfing in Punta Trettu are the Scirocco (wind from South-East and the Mistral (wind from North-West).

Kite Spot Punta Trettu Sardinia

Kitesurfing Porto Pino, Southern Sardinia

Porto PIno beach is one of the best beaches of South Sardinia. It is located in the South-West of Sardinia, in the municipality of Sant’Anna Arresi.

The winds in Porto Pino are almost always gusty.

Anyway, the best wind for kitesurfing in this kite spot are the Scirocco (blowing from South-East) and the Libeccio (blowing from South-West)/ These winds don’t bring waves so thery are the best winds even for beginners.

The wind from West, that can create big waves, and the Mistral (blowing from North-West), gusty and usually very strong, are not suitable for beginners.

Which is the Best Kitesurfing Spot in South Sardinia?

As seen before, in the Souther Sardinia there are many Kitesurfing Spots. For this reason, many people wonder: which is the best Kitesurfing Spot in South Sardinia? Which is the best Sardinia Kitesurfing Spot? Which is the kite spot where the wind always blows?

Considering kite spots suitable both for beginners and experts, we can say that the Sardinia Kitesurfing Spots with an high percentage of good wind are:

  • Punta Trettu with the winds of Mistral (North-West) and Scirocco (South-East).
  • Cagliari with the wind of Levante (East) and Scirocco (South-East).

Finally, considering that the most frequent winds in Sardinia are the Scirocco, the Mistral and the Thermal wind, the most probably windy kite spot wiil be Punta Trettu.

Since many Kite Spot are not easily reachable by public transport, having a car is highly recommended.

North Sardinia Kitesurfing Spots

As we said previously,  in the North of Sardinia, the mail winds are the Mistral (North-West wind), the Tramontana (North) and the Grecale (North-East). Those winds are cold and often gusty because disturbed by the nearby Corsica.

Air temperatures in the North of Sardinia are often also over 5 degrees lower than the temperatures in the South of the island. Use of a wetsuit is always recommended.

The most known kite spots in North Sardinia are San Teodoro, Porto Pollo and Badesi.

In San Teodoro, on the north-east coast of Sardinia, you can kitesurfing with the winds of Grecale, Scirocco and Levante (all winds from East). When these winds blow strong (> 35 knots), they can create waves of up to 2 meters. In this case the spot is not suitable for beginners.

In San Teodoro, the winds blowing from west are offshore.

In the beach “La Cinta”, during the summer season, there are many bathers; for this reason it is necessay to walk at the north of the beach where bathers and kitesurfers respect each other. Thanks to this non-written rule, in San Teodoro, it is still possible to practice kitesurfing without major problems.

Another beach for kitesurfing in San Teodoro s the small bay located between Puntaldia and San Teodoro.

Kitesurfing in Porto Pollo, Northern Sardinia

Located in North-West of Sardinia, in the  Municipality of Palau, Porto Pollo is one of the most popular places in Europe for kitesurfing, windsurfing and all sailing sports in general.

Porto Pollo has become famous in the 1970-1980s when it hosted many important world events. It still hosts, every year, some kite and sail events.

The Kite Zone in Porto Pollo

The kite zone of Porto Pollo is located close to the Isola dei Gabbiani (Island of the gulls). The area is small, so the courses take place with a support of a boat that takes the students out of the beach. Dunes along the bay offer protection for the non-kitesurfers. In the beach there are also a couple of bars where you can take a bier and relax.

In Porto Pollo there are four main winds, mostly depending on the time of the year. During the Winter and Spring it blows the Tramontana (North), during the summer the Poniente (west) and Libeccio (south-west) are the most common winds, In In autumn often blows the Scirocco (South East).

Porto Pollo is one of the most windy places in Sardinia: the proximity to Corsica creates a funnel effect that increases the winds. Anyway, always because the Corsica, the winds are often very gusty and so not really suitable for kite beginners.

Kitesurfing in Badesi, Northern Sardinia

Another beautiful kite beach for those who like to kitesurf in the North of Sardinia, is Badesi.

It works fine with all the winds coming from North. The wind, when strong, creates waves. In this conditions the spot is not suitable for beginners.
